2 stages, 2 wins! The Centrakor duo, Mikael Mergui and Richard Rombini, completed a flawless 2-stage race from Marseille to Barcelona!
Matteo Sericano (Tyrolit), 2nd overall: "We're delighted with this result, which allowed us to put ourselves to the test and place ourselves ahead of many prestigious teams and boats. But the greatest satisfaction lies in our performance over the two legs of this regatta.
On the second leg, we suffered from the decision to sail close to the coast in uncertain weather conditions, a choice which proved less than advantageous. However, we found the strength not to lose our determination until the end of the race, both during the night and the following day, keeping our Class40 among the best in the final rankings.
This regatta had a special value for me, as I had the opportunity to forge closer ties with some of my childhood heroes. Their willingness to share their experiences, which I dreamed of as a child, inspired me and filled me with admiration.
This spirit is a unique aspect of ocean sailing and one of the reasons I'm so passionate about what I do."
Mathieu Claveau (Prendre la mer Agir pour la Forêt), 2nd sharp (pointu): "We took the lead on the 2nd leg on the evening of the first day after a good weather analysis and a few good strategic moves. Once we were ahead, the pressure was on and it was impossible to rest on our laurels, as every inch of mile gained or lost required new adjustments... every variation in wind strength and direction required an adjustment to the trajectory and weight distribution on the boat.
We kept Centrakor and Phenix in check all night and part of the morning...
Unfortunately, the wind picked up in the afternoon and the angle opened up.... And here.... The power of our opponents' more recent hulls spoke for itself. The knife fell, and 4 boats came back in front, including Crosscall like an airplane!
All in all, it was a great satisfaction to have led the way, warmly congratulated and recognized by the organization and our competitors....
In short, we're a little disappointed, but we've still had a great race in 2024, and this motivates the team even more for future projects!"
Aurélien Ducroz (Crosscall), 3rd overall: "It was my very first regatta in the Mediterranean aboard the Crosscall Class40, and it was really great. It was a constant battle. We sailed on sight from start to finish, and it's fair to say that the Mediterranean lived up to its reputation for being unpredictable! There was never a good routing or weather file, even for ten minutes! It was all very interesting. We tried to keep up with the locals, but didn't always succeed. We made a few mistakes at times, notably when we stole the start in Barcelona, which forced us to make repairs (and cross the line again, editor's note), and above all we tested our patience, which isn't exactly one of my strong points to begin with! In addition to the conditions, which weren't what we're used to in the Atlantic, the race format was also different, as it was quite short. It was a lot of fun and taught me a lot of new things, as it's a whole new exercise to get the boat up and running in this type of situation. In particular, it's going to give me something to think about when it comes to the sails."
