This Friday, May 2, at 12:21 pm, the Class40 #158 Crédit Mutuel, skippered by Ian Lipinski and Alberto Bona, crossed the finish line ahead of the very first CIC Med Channel Race.
A thrilling battle in the Mediterranean
Right from the start, the Franco-Italian duo had to contend with some formidable competition: Mikael Mergui and Kéni Piperol, aboard Centrakor, gave nothing away throughout the course. The two crews sailed side by side for much of the race.
It was in the final hours of the race that Crédit Mutuel managed to make the difference, widening the gap to take the lead.
Alberto Bona :
"I'm very happy and I'd like to thank Ian for choosing me for this great race. It was really great to sail in the Mediterranean on a magnificent course. The boat proved once again that it worked really well and was perfectly prepared, which enabled us to sail at the top of our game. You always learn something when you're sailing with Ian, but this time I taught him something: in the Mediterranean, you've got to go out with a foulies jacket and a bonnet!"
Ian Lipinski:
"For me, this victory is symbolic, as it may be the last race I do with boat #158, which had begun its history with a victory in the Transat Jacques Vabre.
It was also the first edition of the CIC Med Channel Race, and it lived up to all its promises. The course was superb, the conditions varied, and the scenery incredible. (source : Facebook CIC Med Channel Race).
Strategically and meteorologically, there was a lot to play for, with some very fast moments and some tricky ones. Fortunately, our boat is very versatile, which is a real asset in this type of configuration. We also paid particular attention to our trajectories, especially around Calvi and Majorca."
