Setting out from Marseille on Monday June 23, the 8 Class40s taking part in the Massilia were unable to reach Macinaggio on course due to a lack of wind. The race committee decided to use the official score at La Giraglia, as set out in the race instructions, as the classification for the first leg. The Class40s had in fact been stopped for several hours east of Capraia at speeds of less than 0.5 knots, or even negative.
