Record broken!
Belgium Ocean Racing – Curium has set a new 24-hour distance record in the Class40, covering 456.09 miles at an average speed of 19 knots.
An impressive achievement by the Belgian crew Benoît Hantzperg and Renaud Dehareng, competing in the 2nd edition of the Globe40, under the leadership of Belgian skipper Jonas Gerckens.
Never before had a Class40 sailed so far in 24 hours! The previous record (440.2 miles), set in July 2024 by Guillaume Pirouelle aboard Sogestran – Seafrigo, has just been broken by Class40 No. 187 Belgium Ocean Racing – Curium, which now sets the new world benchmark at 456 miles, equivalent to over 789 kilometers covered in a single day!
The record was set between Monday, October 13, 2025, 08:15 UTC and Tuesday, October 14, 2025, 08:15 UTC, during the second leg of the Globe40, from Mindelo (Cape Verde) to La Réunion. The Belgian boat achieved this feat while speeding down the Brazilian coast, navigating around the St. Helena High before setting course toward the southern Indian Ocean.
Benoît Hantzperg:
"We’ve just broken the 24-hour Class40 record — that’s huge! The previous record was 440 miles covered, at just over 18 knots on average. Today, the opportunity was too good to miss! Jonas and I had joked about it before the race, but to actually smash it at the first chance — that’s insane!
Congrats to our tech team — Albane and Pierre — who prepared us a machine worthy of the challenge! And hats off to Renaud, who’s handling things like a champ!
That said, the race is still on, and our main goal remains to be the first to reach La Réunion."
Renaud Dehareng, co-skipper and owner of Curium 187:
"I wouldn’t say it was comfortable… but what a ride! And it’s not over yet!
Ben did a pro-level job!
We’ve broken the Class40 record! The 187 is now officially the fastest Class40 in history over 24 hours — us, the Belgium Ocean Racing Team!
We’re staying focused on this leg, but this is just massive!"
Jonas Gerckens:
"I’m extremely proud of what the team is achieving. It’s a real feat to keep a boat sailing at such speeds for so long.
We’ve come a long way after two tough years, but we’re finally showing our true potential.
This record is the icing on the cake — but the cake itself is still the overall Globe40 ranking.
We’ve already covered a beautiful stretch since the start, but there’s still a long road ahead.
Beyond that, it shows the great work done by the whole team, both technical and sailing.
The structure we’ve built with Belgium Ocean Racing is paying off, and we’ll keep fine-tuning it — on land and at sea — to fly Belgium’s colors high.
We take this world record as an incredibly motivating reward, while staying focused and ready for what’s next."
