TRIN'40: a new major solo race starting from La Trinité-sur-Mer

1,200 miles, open sea, pure solo sailing. On 24th April, the Class40s will set sail from La Trinité-sur-Mer for the very first edition of the Trin’40. A new race designed by skippers, for skippers, to kick off the Atlantic season with a demanding and uncompromising course. After a year focused on double-handed racing, solo racing is back in the spotlight.

The Trin'40 originated from a simple idea put forward by a small group of skippers from Orlabay: to treat themselves to a real solo test at the start of the season. Not a delivery trip, not a disguised training session, but a long, challenging, formative race. The Class40 has turned this desire into reality by officially adding it to its 2026 calendar. The notice of race has now been published, officially opening registration for this highly awaited first edition.

1,200 miles to get started

The tone is set right from the start in La Trinité-sur-Mer. Heading for the Iroise Sea, the south of England, then a long tack offshore to Cape Finisterre, before returning to southern Brittany. A 100% offshore course, tailor-made for solo sailors: spring weather, long-term strategies, managing fatigue, equipment and decisive choices right up to the finish line.

The great return of solo sailing

The first solo race of the season after a year 2025 largely devoted to double-handed racing, the Trin'40 comes at just the right time. It is a real trial run for skippers who want to quickly measure themselves against the fleet and get into the rhythm of the major Class40 events. The line-up promises to be dense and highly competitive.

The Class40 returns to southern Brittany

It had been a long time since the Class40s had returned to southern Brittany for an offshore race. Setting sail from La Trinité-sur-Mer, the Trin'40 is reconnecting with this DNA. Organised by Class40, with technical and operational support from the Société Nautique de La Trinité-sur-Mer for the sporting aspect, the event is a major milestone for Class40, with the aim of becoming a permanent fixture in the solo racing calendar.

Registration is now open, and the first edition is already shaping up to be exciting!

They said :

Cédric de Kervenoael (President of Class40) : The Trin'40 was born out of a simple yet powerful desire: that of skippers from Orlabay to create a race that resembles them. A demanding solo event, designed as a real testing ground and preparation for the Route du Rhum. The Class40 Board of Directors immediately believed in this initiative and chose to commit fully to it, promoting the event through communication and promotion, and entrusting the sporting organisation to the Société Nautique de La Trinité-sur-Mer. The event is already proving to be a success, with skippers showing enormous enthusiasm. This mobilisation confirms the relevance of the project and the demand for a new race format within the Class40. With the Trin'40, the Class40 is taking a new step forward and affirming its desire to organise events that it has partial control over, in line with the skippers' expectations. On 24th April, La Trinité-sur-Mer will be the scene of this new adventure. Come along and support the skippers taking part in the Trin'40 and join them in writing the first page of this race that is set to make its mark.

Achille Nebout (Amarris) is delighted to be at the start of this new event: “The Trin'40 is a great initiative. It will be my first solo race, with a new organisation and a new format. It's an event that has real potential to become a major fixture on the Class40 circuit.”

William Mathelin-Moreaux (Les Invincibles) welcomes the addition of this new event to the calendar: "It's great to see new races appearing on the Class40 circuit. This renewal is important for the class and allows us to welcome even more new skippers. In a Route du Rhum year, having a major solo race at the start of the season is a real opportunity to gauge our level of preparation. The course is familiar, but the early spring conditions can make the race demanding. With the level of the fleet, it promises to be very close... I can't wait!"
