Scows and pointus: same rules, same checks
Barnabé Jahier
Ensuring sporting fairness is one of the Class40’s responsibilities. For the past month, François Angoulvant, Class40 Chief Measurer, together with Philippe Cousin and Dominique Flayac, has been carrying out a wide-ranging measurement campaign: checking sails, bowsprits and ballast tank volumes. Whether scows or pointus, all boats must comply with the same rules. We met with the Class40 Chief Measurer to find out more about the checks being carried out.
"We are not particularly concerned about compliance with the rules. But by carrying out checks, we can put any potential concerns or discussions between competitors to rest, particularly regarding possible rule infringements or attempts to gain an advantage.
Since September, I have been appointed by the Class40 Board of Directors to carry out sail area measurement checks. We have been conducting checks in October, here on site. Just over 30 boats have been inspected, both on a voluntary basis and through random checks.
In total, just under 60 sails have been checked. Six were sent back to their sailmakers to be brought into compliance. These were only minor issues, but if something falls outside the rules, it needs to be corrected.
Other checks are being carried out throughout these two weeks, particularly on ballast tank volumes. Class40s are limited to a maximum ballast capacity of two 750-litre tanks.
We also measure the bowsprits, the spars at the front of the boat used to fly spinnakers and gennakers.
Finally, there are the more comprehensive checks. Every Class40 has a measurement certificate listing various items and pieces of equipment that are taken into account when determining the boat’s weight, which is itself subject to class rules. Our measurers check that the equipment listed on the certificate is actually on board and that no modifications have been made.
The sailors have welcomed the checks, precisely because they reassure everyone that sporting fairness is being upheld.
All 49 boats taking the start in ten days’ time will be fully compliant with the rules.”
